Words have power. With them, you can challenge and congratulate, influence and inspire. Your choice of words can mean the difference between having your ideas heard and understood -- or passed over.
Throughout my career as a multi-disciplinary creative, I often find myself communicating my ideas to technical teams. What helps? Primarily, speaking to them in terms they already understand. When you use language that resonates with your audience, it shows that you respect their expertise, and regard the differences between you -- your training, roles and experiences -- as an asset, not a barrier to be overcome.
I am traveling to Freiburg Germany today to speak at The Smashing Conference next week. There I’ll dig into a dozen homonym phrases that are highly relatable to creative and technical folks alike. Diverse teams can use these homonyms to level-set, so it’s easier to communicate and share information in an open and collegial way, from Day One.
Working in the tech industry as a creative for nearly 25 years, I’ve seen projects takeoff as colleagues find their common ground. From there, it’s possible to form creative and dynamic partnerships between designers and developers, with remarkably successful results.
If you can’t make it to Germany this month, don’t worry. I’ll post my slides and a video to this site afterwards, so you can see and hear my talk.
